Computer techie work.

A friend and former co-worker of mine asked me to come over and take a look at his parents' computer tonight. It's been having issues, and they just got a new computer. Their main hope was that I could move their old files over to the new computer.

Both the old and new computer have network cards, as they've both been used with their cable modem, so I was thinking I'd just hook them together, and copy the files across the network.

When Pat said he'd been having some 'issues', I was expecting minor stuff. Instead, I find a Win98 install that is so corrupted and infested that I can't get it to run for 10 minutes without dying. After fighting with it for about an hour, I finally gave up and did it the old fashioned way.

I yanked the hard drive out of the old PC, hooked it to the new one, and copied everything over manually.

I also installed Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Firefox for them, on the new computer. Hopefully that'll help keep their new one in shape a little longer.

All-in-all, I was there for a little over two hours. Definitely not how I planned to spend my evening. Especially since I had planned on hanging out with a friend of mine. I felt a little bad about basically cancelling on him.

On the plus side, though, Pat's parents did pay me for the work. I always feel a little awkward about asking for payment when I'm doing work for friends and friends-of-a-friend, but I'm just too busy not to, these days. I don't mind helping out my close friends, but it just takes too long to be everyone's tech support guy.

[Note: This was actually posted yesterday, but LJ's e-mail posting still sucks and doesn't work half the time (when using PGP/GPG signed posts).]

New favorite Olympic sport.

So, Sunday evening I was working at The Hanger (airport bar), and the manager was watching the Olympics. It was slow, so I was hanging out and watching it, too.

And then it happened. I discovered a new favorite Olympic sport to watch.

Women's Beach Volleyball.

Wow. First of all, these girls are hot. I swear, half of them could be models. Secondly, they're wearing very nice (read: skimpy) outfits, with the bikini tops, and the speedo-style bottoms. Very slick. And lastly, as if that wasn't enough, those girls are pretty amazing athletes.

I mean, being in the olympics, I expected them to be good. Obviously. You don't play in the Olympics if you aren't. But I was amazed at just how quick and agile those girls are.
