Annoyances.

You know what really annoys me?

When I spend half an hour trying to get something working, and I then find out the fix was a 20 second thing ithat I overlooked.

Specifically, I was trying to get TrueType fonts working on nausicaa, my newly linux installed laptop. I've done this before, but it's been a while. And, last time I did it, I did it by installing xfstt.

This time, XFree86 4 is out, it includes support for TT fonts, and I didn't want to install a new font server for them. So, of course, I'll just set up xfs to handle them.

Only, I'm stupid, and I couldn't figure it out. I did everything I could think of with xfs to get it working, and there was just no go.

Then, finally, something clicked. So, I added the directory where my TT fonts are to the FontPath for the X config, instead of the xfs config.

Bingo. problem solved.

Bleh.

New fellow Co-Op.

A new co-op chick, Marisa, started in my department this week. She seems pretty cool, and she's fairly cute, too.

Bonus. ;-)

She ended up down the hall from me, instead of right across the hall like I'd hoped, but oh well. I think I'm gonna see if my roommate is up for a movie Friday, and maybe ask her, too.

She's from New York here, although I'm not entirely sure where exactly. I think she either grew up in, or has family in, the Bronx though, and she has a bit of a New York City accent (just enough to be cute. ;-).

. . .

Ack, that was unexpected. Right in the middle of typing this, she stopped by my office. Ah, well. Back to work.

Laptop computer name.

Oh, yeah. I've decided on a computer name for my laptop. It has been dubbed:
nausicaa

For those not familiar with it, nausicaa is the lead character in the greatest Anime ever created, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. It was created by Miyazaki and Ghibli studios, of Princess Mononoke (among others) fame.

The bad thing is, Nausicaa was never released outside of Japan. (Well, technically a horrible and disgusting edit of it called "Warriors of the Wind" was released in the US, and in English, but literally a quarter of the movie was edited out. They decided that only by removing the entire plot would american audiences (read: kids) like it). This is actually the reason that Princess Mononoke is the first Miyazaki film released in the US in the past 15 years, too. His bad experience with Nausicaa soured him greatly towards US distribution. I consider this a huge loss, as he is the greatest Anime genius of our time.
