VeriSign is incompetent.

VeriSign, the people who run the .com and .net registries, are absolutely incompetent.

If you try to look up the host name:


You should get an error saying that this host doesn't exist. It can't exist, because that domain name isn't registered, as shown here:

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Unfortunately, because VeriSign is incompetent, and has decided to try to basically screw over the Internet community by ignoring and breaking Internet protocols, if you try to check the host name I mentioned above, you *will* get a result.

You'll be pointed to one of VeriSign's web servers. In other words, no host name lookups for non-existent domains will every return negative. Instead, you'll always receive the address of VeriSign's web server. This will break a lot of things, and cause a lot of confusion and frustration.

Idiot bastards.

Incompetence. . .

I should have been more clear. . . the incompetence is in thinking that this will work out, and work out to their benefit.

I think it's really short sighted, and that as more people become aware of this, and as it starts causing problems, VeriSign is going to end up with little more than a lot of people really pissed off.

For example, I have one domain name that I registered a long time ago, and it was registered through them (Well, InterNIC then, which later became NetSol, which was bought by VeriSign). I've been meaning to transfer it for a long time, but a minor issue prevented me from doing so for a while, and then I just never got around to it.

I transfered it this morning.

I don't plan on having anything to do with VeriSign again n the future.

Ok, well, that I'd agree with. I'm trying to convine the CEO to start registering our domains with someone - anyone - else, and to even consider transferring our existing ones away from Verisign. I didn't like them before, but this just pushed me over the edge.

Good idea. I transfered mine, and I'm suggesting to everyone I know that they should do the same, if I they have any domains registered there.

They have a lot of people angry at them. It's quite amazing. I havn't heard anyone say "Oh, this is a good idea."
