IMAP, coming to a GMail near you.

Google has announced that they're adding IMAP support to Gmail. This will include both the standard Gmail, and also mail from Google Apps for Domains.

Awesome.

I wonder if Yahoo mail and Hotmail will follow suit, now? It seems like they're always a little behind on Google on the mail features (such as with AJAXified interfaces and with huge amounts of mail storage).

Comments

I know that Yahoo has had either pop or imap access for a long time. The catch is that it's only for people who pay a monthly fee.

Everybody followed suit when Google offered 1GB+ mail storage, but that's a direct, quantifiable number. Marketers seem to think that numeric comparisons are all that the average consumer can or cares to understand. For example, remember the "megahertz war" of processor manufacturers, and how not long ago a certain AMD chip was actually faster than an Intel chip at the same clock speed.

I think enough people just use the web client--for example, at work--that it won't matter a whole lot. I'd sure like to use my own email client for my Yahoo account, though!
